Minor Assignment #2:
Spatial Graffiti  
Space is an Illusion, but so is Depth


linear perspective 
2 pt. = oblique perspective

18" x 24" paper size
15" x 20" image size

Rules:

  • Make use of your intials to create the composition > J E P <  
  • For a challenge create a composition of 5 letters that spell a word incongruent in meaning to the forms of the cubes. Such as what you see above: M E M O R Y
  • How about: baby, panda, dance, smile, zebra, horse, mercy, etc.???
  • Your drawing is to be created in pencil
  • Contour edges only, no shading
  • Make sure you have a variety of cube sizes and porportions
  • Make sure you have a variety of visual weights in your cubes
  • Some of your letters may lay down on their face like the letter "R" above, or on their back, as is the letter "E"
  • Your letters may be a combination of upper and lower case
  • Try to activate the negative space of your drawing to the best of your ability

Project #9: White Conte on a Dark Ground

This is a fun exercise to try your hand at and your mind, as you must think in reverse! Similar to charcoal drawings we have been involved with, you must, must, MUST work this type of a drawing up slowly, allowing your values to separate slowly -- and pushing the highest contrast areas of value at the very end. Your goal is to develop a separation of values that identify a foreground, a middle ground, and a background. Video: Ficitional Landscape watch for assistance Homework: On a dark piece of paper -- darker than middle grey, create a drawing with white Conte, pastel or chalk. 10 x 14" The subject matter is taken from observation such as  still life, a landscape from a photograph, human figure Here are some examples:
